Free Time Sewing Project

I managed quite a bit of quilty time this weekend and I'm so happy! Yesterday morning I finished piecing the backing for my Birthday Garden quilt. Then I looked at the pile of 2 inch strips I had left from my brithday FQs and couldn't bring myself to add them to my stash. So I sat down at my sewing machine and started sewing the strips into pairs. Then I sewed the pairs together to make four-fabric strip sets. The strip sets were cut into 2 inch segments and sewn together to make 16-patch blocks.

Then my DIL and I spent about 30 minutes trying to set the blocks so that no two blocks touched side-by-side or diagonally. Finally I couldn't look at the blocks anymore and decided I was OK with diagonal touching and sewed the blocks together. The quilt is about 30 by 36 inches right now and I'm very happy with it.

While I was putting it together I kept thinking about what I was going to do with the quilt. I don't know anyone who is pregnant and I could have donated it to the local homeless shelter for pregnant women. But, once I hung it on my design board and started to show my DIL my Birthday Garden Quilt it came to me - I'm saving this little quilt for the grandchild my DS and DIL keep telling me I will get in five years. I can wait that long to use it. And why not, how cool will it be to have a quilt made with fabric from grandma's quilt? I love the idea.

Well, it's time for Sunday night dinner and to watch the rest of the football for this weekend. Only three more weekends of football and then I'll be counting the days until baseball season starts. Oh yeah, there will be some golf in there too, but golf is on nearly every weekend all year anyway.

We had extremely warm weather here this weekend. Yesterday the temp reached 70, if not a little higher. How depressing! I so need a good snowstorm. This 70 degree weather in January is ridiculous! I live in the northern part of the country to get my snow in winter. OK, I'll stop whining now!

Hee, hee - this makes me thing of how Broken Dishes came to be. I put all the half square triangle squares in the plastic box together then left it hanging on the wall. Neat looking but too small for anything - even a baby quilt. If you can't stand to wait 5 years you could do something like that - except using squares instead of triangle squares.

You must not like basketball all that much - I know I don't. At least not pro ball. I used to love basketball in high school and college. Here at our house we are very into hockey. We've given Fred the cable hockey package for his birthday two years in a row now. Gives me lots of time to sew because he's watching hockey. If I weren't trying to get Sophie's Stars done I'd be up there watching too while doing some appliqué.

A great plan ahead quilt -- you came up with a great idea. I have a small afghan that my mom made just like the big one on the couch. I have always just loved it.

Hmmm....wonder how many more quilts this child will accumulate before it's arrival.....

what a great idea to keep the quilt for your first grandchild. I love the way it turned out. And the name. LOL! I do the same thing. Try to not have the same fabric touch anywhere when I lay out scrappy blocks. But usually end up conceding defeat and have a couple diagonal touches.

Great Quilt! Is it OK if I say GO BEARS? It is way to warm here in Chicago. I want snow and colder weather but not to cold.

I love your smaller version of your own quilt! I have also done this with the bits left over from a larger quilt project. It is fun to do!

I agree, a quilt made like gramma's quilt is perfect! I love the colors in this quilt, reminds me of a colorwash quilt...

Wow, looking at the picture, that really looks very Monet-like for a garden of flowers.

It is a pretty quilt in progress! I made my sister a king sized log cabin and used the light pastel scraps to make her grand-daughter (that would be my great-niece) a quilt - so the 2 quilts are tied together in that way too - I love that idea!

Cheers!

Paula, you have got to put the story of your quilt onto your label especially if it destined for a grandchild's quilt. It looks wonderful! I think you were smart to finally give up on the notion that same two couldn't be in close contact. Moving one and it messes it up in another spot and really, you would have to examine it to find where they might. The grandbaby and its parent's honestly won't care.

All the colours look great together.

I saw this photo posted on the Stashbuster group - and I love how you titled it "Don't Touch Me". I love how you are planning ahead for the grandbabies.

Maybe your kids will decide to have them sooner than 5 years. When dh and I married we wanted to wait at least 3 years and then tried and tried - who knew I would have problems... after 7.5 years of marriage we had our dd....but not b/c we wanted to wait that long. Happy Weekend! ~Bonnie
