Sweet P's First Saturday Quilting Class

I started my first Saturday class an evening early. I've been home with back pain all day today and just couldn't tolerate being still any longer so I started on my first post card this evening. I scrounged through my scrap bin and found a 6 inch square of fall fabric. I ironed on some Wonder Under and carefully cut out two leaves. I definitely need to find a small pair of scissors with very sharp points (anyone have any recommendations for good scissors?). Then I poked around my FQ drawers and found some fabric with what I would call woodland nymphs. A little more Wonder Under and some trimming and I had a beautiful young lady for the my postcard. I found a dark brown print for my background. Some more ironing, a little adhesive and I have the back of the card attached to the stabilizer. This is the first project where I have used Wonder Under for applique and used stabilizer. So far I'm happy with my results. Tomorrow's lesson will include working on the machine quilting for the card and practice on the binding.

I have my mother's quilt spread out on my sewing table so my machine is put away for now. I'll finish tying her quilt tomorrow morning and then I will be able to put the machine back and I can finish my post card. I'll also put the binding on mom's quilt and finish that. Not sure if I will be able to do anymore quilting than that tomorrow. A lot will depend on how my back is feeling and if I feel the need to take any muscle relaxants or not. I hoping not since I will still be home alone all day and can do whatever I want to do.

DH comes home on Sunday and the New England Patriots have their first football game. I'll be working on my hand quilting for the afternoon.

Well, I am ready for bed. I'm pleased with the start of my first class and can't wait to finish it tomorrow.

I used to be sold on Gingher, but now I'm sold on Dovo scissors. They are made in Germany and are fantastic - better than Gingher. They have little scissors with wonderful sharp points and short blades. I use them for my appliqué and other cutting - I have 4 pair now! Do an internet search for "Dovo shears". You'll find lots of sites that sell the barber shears made by Dovo, but you should be able to find the sewing ones too. Unfortunately I can't remember the site where I bought mine.

I'm a big Fiskars fan (They are Finnish! - I didn't know that until I moved here!) and they have a very small sharp pair with a slightly curved blade that works very well in for small cuts and points.

Hey, thanks for the shout-out for the Pats, too! Just saw all those Packers posts!

I hope your back stops bothering you; back pain is miserable.

I love your little post card. It is Charming.

As to my mother's painting. She only paints now and then (more drawing then painting). She gave up her art (mostly) when the great depression came along and she found she had to support her mother and 2 sisters. Then the war. Then marriage and us kids. I am sure enjoying looking at that part of her life with her. She is 94, all with it (a little short term memory lose), and relativly healthy. I feel so fortunate to still have her.

PS. Have you ever been to CA?

I'm sorry I forgot to ask how your back is today. I hope it is nothing to serious. Feel better soon.

Sorry to hear that you are having problems. Were you bending over a table cutting that was not up to waist height? That almost sends me off into spasms thinking about it!

Your post card looks great. Have fun with the embellishing. Maybe some gold thread work to embellish around your woodland fairy....

You are doing very well on your self commitments. One day, many years ago I decided I hated the words "I'm gonna..." since they always referred to what I was not doing. I made a mental commitment to either say "I am...." and if not, then just to say "I like..."

I felt a lot better as I no longer had the inner sense that I was shortchanging myself. Basically if it is worth wanting to do, it is worth starting to do and conversely, I did not have to do everything that I admired - just pick, choose and go ahead.
